Zazzle

Tonight at book club we were talking about things we had written when we were younger and how we thought they were just so magnificent. It reminded me of the play I had written when I was in the fourth grade. I had typed it out on the typewriter and was just so proud of that play... until I tried to get some friends to do it for me and realized it was like three minutes long. Either way, I still held onto and now, twenty years later, enjoy its simplicity.

I actually have an entire binder of writing I've saved since 4th grade. It includes short stories, essays, journals, and poetry. I used to write a lot of poetry. It started out handwritten or on a typewriter. Some have illustrations. Now that I've moved to a computer to write the things of my wandering mind, I don't have as much to save in this binder. I still have most every paper written for college and grad school saved somewhere on discs or what not. I don't write nearly as much poetry, but will occasionally sit down and write some verse.

Anyway, here's a story I wrote in 5th grade. I don't remember the specific lesson for this writing assignment, but I think it had something to do with adding details. I do know that my 'inspiration' for this piece was actually a marionette my parents had bought me at some art fair. I kept all the spelling and punctuation errors in there. Here's Zazzle:

It's a spring morning in the Swiss Alps in Switzerland. I was walking in the hills along a path with tons of flowers as far as I could see on either side of me. There were all sorts of flowers and different plants. There were Yuccas, Dandelions Lilys, Roses, Buttercups, and many other plants I could never name.

ALl of a sudden, out of a Lily, popped this little monster. AT first I didn't know what to think. We stared oa each other for a few minutes, then I started to scream. It started to scream too. Then, when we both had stopped screaming, I asked it what it was. It told me it was a mole Zazzle. he also told me his name was Zorze Zazzle. He asked me what I was, and I told him I was a human, and my name was Ashlee.

This monster was the cutest thing on Earth. He had a bright rasberry, chubby, round face, with a boatvh of Sea Green fur around his face. He had a horn that looked like a unicorns horn. It was a Pearly white horn that glistened in the sunlight. IT was right on the top of his little round face. His eyes were a sky blue next to his Rasberry face. They were oval shape exept for the very bottom, which was flat. His noase was like a little black button. His mouth was a cherry red line that curved slightly into a little smile. His body was a Sea Green, furry, ball. The only thing was  a small oval right smack in the middle of his belly. The oval wa like a bright rasberry Cherry. His arms were small, long ones. His hands were chubby, sea Green ones with a thumb and two small fingers. His leggs were a short, Sea Green, Furry ones. His shoes were quite large. They were like sneakers, only a little funny looking. His right shoe was a gray with quarter circles at the toe and the heel. His left shoe was white one with rasberry quarter circles Ot the toe on heel. Both shoes had black shoe laces that were tied in a bow.

He told me many stories, and legends of other Zazzles. I told him mony human stories too. We had a nice time until it was dusk. At dusk I told him I had to go home. So I went home and told my parents my adventure with a real life monster!!!

Copious Amounts of Free Time

I apparently have too much free time...

When you find yourself with too much free time I suggest making:
an Edible Arrangement rendition...
a veggie pizza in the shape of a baby carriage...
and/or a diaper cake!

These were all made for my good friend Cindy's baby shower!! Amy is the friend I helped with the fruit arrangement.

Innocence

So I deal with a lot of kids who are pretty rough around the edges...but the other day I discovered at least one that's still innocent.

Well, she was...

I had to give her a screening of several emotional and behavioral disorders and it required her to answer about 180 questions about her own feelings and behavior. Throughout that survey she learned lots of new things...like what a street gang was, what it meant to be high, and how to gossip.

Ah... the power of education. One more innocent child lost to the ways of the world...

After a short hiatus with them, our ward's Relief Society recently reintroduced the idea of Home, Family, and Personal Enrichment small groups. One of them is the Dining In/Out group.... a group dedicated to foodies (like me!) The organizer of said Enrichment group decided to start a blog...  http://d3delectables.blogspot.com.... and asked me to be a contributor! So...I started my contribution to this new blog fun with my adventures of recreating Cafe Rio!

Jubilee!

My dear friend Ruth turned 30 last weekend. For the last several years she has always turned the week of her birthday into "A Week of Jubilee." This year, since 30 is rather momentous, she decided to have 30 days of Jubilee.

Jubilee officially started on February 15th. Events included small gatherings with just Ruth and a close friend; girls only events such as Sacks and Cinema, and several group events such as Pretend Pizza Palace night, the Official Birthday Party, Harlem Globetrotters, Cheese Party, the Circus, family fun, and Ruth's Spectacular Jubilee. I didn't make to all of the group events, but here are highlights from the ones I did attend... oh and a constant member at all Jubilee events (besides the obvious birthday girl) were personalized chocolate coins... in dark chocolate mint... ah...maze....ing!)

Sacks and Cinema was a girls only event hosted by TRuch. It is an event characterized by sodas in paper bags and movies and something delicious made by TRuch. This year it featured fried jelly sandwiches (with Bear Lake Rasberry Jam... aka Love in a Jar) and a "leading men" quiz created by TRuch and youtube.

The Pizza Palace was a Durham favorite until December 31, 2008 when it shut its doors due to economic troubles. (Or it could be that "Good Time Gary" moved to Atlanta and "Lousy Time Larry" took over and it all went downhill from there) Ruth is lover of the cheesy breadsticks and bad karaoke and would typically have a Jubilee there. Well, since they had closed, Bradley offered his attempt at cheesy breadsticks and karaoke... and thus was born (at least what I call it) Pretender Pizza Palace Party!!! Who needs "Good Time Gary" when you got these guys...
I tried to load a video...but to no avail...I'll have to work on that.

Ruth's official birthday is Feb 21st. Our friend Alison hosted the festivities of "The Big One"...
which included personalized birthday hats, some of Ruth's favorite treats, and the best looking printed napkins I've ever seen in my life!! (And I've been to a lot of weddings where these things usually appear)

Opting for a bigger and flashier event to help things along this year, Ruth scored us some tickets to the Harlem Globetrotters. It's been probably 15 years since I've seen them last... but they are still just as campy and amazing. It was a lot of fun.
Next to the crazy awesome basketball tricks, some of our favorite parts were the blow-ups...they did all sorts of crazy things like eat a "fan" of the opposing team, bounce on their head and do other cool tricks, and make us laugh. IHOP even had blow up breakfast that ran a race during one of the little interludes. We decided 'bacon' had an unfair advantage as their center of gravity was all messed up with them being so tall and all. The also played silly tricks on the audience (like throwing water) so it was probably a good thing we didn't sit too close. All in all, it was awesome!

Ruth's Spectacular Jubilee is an event I hosted! Those who were brave enough to come were separated into teams and given clues to 11 locations throughout Chapel Hill and Durham. Most of them were locally owned and operated and were some of Ruth's favorite things.
After the teams returned we had a cafe Rio inspired dinner...tomatillo dressing and all:

Days 15-30 will be spent in South Africa...a trip Ruth is taking with work. Lucky! Happy Birthday Ruth!!
